Best Golf Cart Communities Around Charlotte
Around Charlotte, golf carts have moved well past the golf course. Neighbors use them to get to the pool, the lake dock, the clubhouse and the Fourth of July parade, and some communities are built with golf cart paths and garages in mind. We put together this guide to the golf cart communities we serve, the rules where you live, and the Queen City Carts shop closest to you.

The rules really do change from town to town. The Town of Fort Mill reminded residents in 2025 that state law sets daylight, four mile and 35 mph limits when a town has no ordinance (Town of Fort Mill), Tega Cay passed its own ordinance allowing night use (City of Tega Cay), and Cornelius went the other way with a ban (Lake Norman Publications). WCNC has a good explainer on golf carts and LSVs on Charlotte roads (WCNC).
How families actually use their golf carts
Ask around these communities and you hear the same stories. Families ride to the school bus stop and back. Lake neighbors haul coolers to the boat dock. Everyone rolls to the clubhouse, the pool, food truck nights and neighborhood events. In towns like Belmont and Tega Cay, and in places like Baxter Village and Birkdale Village, neighbors even ride to dinner and shopping. Whatever your routine, we will help you pick a golf cart or street-legal LSV that fits it, and follow the rules where you live.

Golf cart vs street-legal LSV: which do you need?
If you stay inside your community, or your town has a golf cart ordinance, a regular golf cart is often all you need. If you want to drive into town, after dark, or anywhere without an ordinance, a street-legal low speed vehicle (LSV) is the sure path. Our street-legal LSV conversion page explains the equipment and paperwork in plain English.
Lithium upgrades for community driving
Long days at the lake and loops around the neighborhood are where lithium shines. A lithium golf cart battery conversion cuts weight, charges faster, adds range and means no more watering batteries.

Golf Cart Community FAQ
Can I drive a golf cart on the street in Charlotte?
We have not found a City of Charlotte golf cart permit program, so a regular golf cart on public streets is a gray area at best. A titled, registered and insured low speed vehicle (LSV) can legally run on North Carolina roads posted 35 mph or less.
Can I drive a golf cart on the street in Cornelius?
No. Since October 2025, Cornelius bans unregistered golf carts on town streets, sidewalks and greenways. A registered LSV is the legal option.
What are the golf cart rules in South Carolina?
You need an SCDMV permit decal and registration, proof of liability insurance and a licensed driver 16 or older. Without a local ordinance, carts run in daylight only, on secondary roads posted 35 mph or less, within four miles of the registered address, and cross faster roads only at intersections. Some towns, like Tega Cay, allow night use by ordinance.
Do I need insurance for my golf cart?
In South Carolina, yes, liability insurance is required for a permitted golf cart. In North Carolina, local ordinances and LSV registration require it too. Either way, we recommend it.
How old do you have to be to drive a golf cart on the street?
16, with a valid driver’s license, in both North and South Carolina.
Which communities allow golf carts?
Tega Cay, Belmont, Cramerton, Lincolnton and Mount Holly have local golf cart rules. South Carolina communities can also use state rules in daylight. Most HOAs set their own rules for private streets and paths, so check yours.
Do you deliver to my community?
Call us at (704) 302-1200 and we will talk through delivery for your golf cart and your community.
