Charlotte keeps growing, and more families are discovering how handy a cart can be for neighborhood errands, trips to the pool and evening rides with the kids. If you’re shopping for one, we’re glad you’re here. This guide walks through where you can ride in Charlotte, why a street-legal LSV makes life simpler, what to check before you buy and how to take one for a spin. (This is general information, not legal advice. Rules can change, so always double-check before you ride.)
Where can you ride in Charlotte?
North Carolina lets cities and counties write their own golf cart rules for public streets with a speed limit of 35 mph or less (G.S. 160A-300.6 for cities and G.S. 153A-245 for counties). The state also sets one rule everywhere: nobody under 16 may drive a golf cart on a public street.
Here’s the part that surprises a lot of Charlotte shoppers. Charlotte police guidance says the city has no standard golf cart regulations, and that carts driven on the roads must follow all rules of the road, including being registered and licensed with the DMV. Some nearby Mecklenburg County towns are stricter, and their rules differ from town to town. That means a standard, non-titled golf cart is a gray area on many Charlotte streets.
A street-legal low-speed vehicle (LSV) clears that up. Under G.S. 20-121.1, an LSV can be driven on streets with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less and can cross faster roads at intersections. It’s titled, tagged and insured like a car, so you know exactly where you stand.
LSV vs. golf cart: which is right for Charlotte?
North Carolina defines an LSV as a four-wheeled vehicle with a top speed greater than 20 mph but less than 25 mph (G.S. 20-4.01(27)g). To be legal on the road, it needs:
- headlamps, stop lamps, turn signals and tail lamps
- reflex reflectors
- a parking brake and rearview mirrors
- a windshield and wipers
- a speedometer and seat belts
- a VIN
It also has to meet the federal LSV safety standard, 49 C.F.R. 571.500.
A standard golf cart is great on private property, in a golf community or at a campground. For riding around a Charlotte neighborhood, though, a street-legal LSV is the easier, more confident choice. That’s why every cart on our lot is street ready, and why street-legal LSVs are our specialty.
Your Charlotte cart-shopping checklist
When you start comparing carts, these are the questions we’d ask if we were in your shoes:
1. How many seats do you need?
Four-passenger carts with a flip rear seat are the most popular pick for families. The rear seat folds into a cargo deck for groceries, coolers or sports gear. Six-seaters make sense for bigger families or neighborhood carpools.
2. Lithium or lead-acid?
Most new street-legal carts now come with lithium batteries. They’re lighter, need no watering and typically last longer than flooded lead-acid batteries. We break it all down in our lithium vs. lead-acid guide, and if you already own a lead-acid cart, we can convert it.
3. Is the paperwork in order?
For an LSV, ask for the title and confirm the VIN matches. We handle the title and tag paperwork for you and explain every step so there are no surprises.
4. What does the warranty cover?
Warranty terms vary by brand, and battery coverage is often separate from the cart. Ask what’s covered, for how long and whether you need to register the battery. Our warranty page explains the options.
5. Who services it?
Buying close to home makes service easy. Our Charlotte showroom on Wilkinson Blvd is open Monday through Saturday, 9 to 5, and our service team keeps carts rolling long after the sale.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a regular golf cart on Charlotte streets?
Charlotte police guidance says there are no standard city golf cart regulations and carts on the road must follow the rules of the road, including DMV registration. Because rules vary across Mecklenburg County towns, a titled street-legal LSV is the simplest path.
What roads can an LSV use in North Carolina?
Streets with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less. An LSV can cross a faster road at an intersection (G.S. 20-121.1).
Do I need insurance for an LSV?
Yes. LSVs must be registered and insured like other motor vehicles (G.S. 20-121.1).
How old do you have to be to drive one?
State law says nobody under 16 may drive a golf cart on a public street. An LSV is a registered motor vehicle, so plan on a valid driver’s license.
Can I see my payment before I visit?
Yes. Use our payment tool for a soft-pull estimate. Examples are based on $1,500 down, OAC.
